What is a Search Engine?
The concept of the search engine as an internet tool was pioneered by Companies such as Google that have, with the passage of time, succeeded in making it an all important device on the internet. Search engines provide an interface between a group of items which enables users to specify criteria about an item of interest and have the engine find the matching items. This criteria is referred to as a search query. In the case of text search engines, the search query is typically expressed as a set of words that identify the desired concept that one or more documents may contain.
There are several styles of search query syntax that vary in strictness. Whereas some text search engines require users to enter two or three words separated by white space, other search engines may enable users to specify entire documents, pictures, sounds, and various forms of natural language. Some search engines apply improvements to search queries to increase the likelihood of providing a quality set of items through a process known as query expansion.
The list of items that meet the criteria specified by the query are typically sorted, or ranked, in some regard so as to place the most relevant items first. Ranking items by relevance (from highest to lowest) reduces the time required to find the desired information. Probabilistic search engines rank items based on measures of similarity and sometimes popularity or authority. Boolean search engines typically only return items which match exactly without regard to order.
To provide a set of matching items quickly, a search engine will typically collect metadata about the group of items under consideration beforehand through a process referred to as indexing. The index typically requires a smaller amount of computer storage, and provides a basis for the search engine to calculate the items relevance. The search engine may store a copy of each item in a cache so that users can see the state of the item at the time it was indexed or for archive purposes or to make repetitive processes work more efficiently and quickly.
Notably, some search engines do not store an index. Crawler, or spider type search engines may collect and assess items at the time of the search query. Meta search engines simply reuse the index or results of one or more other search engines.
Search Engine Importance
In order to highlight the importance of the search engine, let us consider a simple example of a telephone directory listing. When you subscribe to a telephone service, your number needs to be listed in a directory in order to help locate yourself to anybody who needs to contact you. If your telephone number is incorrectly listed, the chances are that those who need to contact you will not be able to do so. Similarly, if you have competitors who are listed ahead of you in the directory, the chances of them getting contacted by prospective clients (and landing business) is higher.
This same scenario applies to a website. Assume that you have a website and are a seller of black coffee based in South America. An interested buyer from Japan may search for ‘Black coffee exporters’ on the web and this query will generate literally millions of hits. But a problem occurs if your site is not listed within the first page and within the first ten rankings. On the flip side, if your site is ranked within the first five, the chances of getting inquires is increased.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via ‘natural’ (organic or algorithmic) search results. Usually, the sooner a site is presented in a search result, the higher it ‘ranks’ and the higher the number of searchers who will visit that site. SEO can also target different types of searches, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.
As a marketing strategy for increasing a site's relevance, SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO efforts may involve a site's coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Other, more noticeable efforts may include adding unique content to a site, ensuring that content is easily indexed by search engine robots, and making the site more appealing to users. Other techniques, known as Black Hat SEO or ‘spamdexing’, use methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that tend to harm search engine user experience. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques and may remove their listings.
The acronym "SEO" can also refer to ‘search engine optimizers’, a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term "search engine friendly" may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.
